Little Demons
I know you want to axe gashes
to the backs of their skulls, but try
this: hand each one a mug of warm
milk and honey. After, sigh and sweep
up the shards of ceramic (without
gripping the sharpest one; slicing
grins across their screaming throats—
I know you thought about it).
I know you want to lock your doors,
but let them enter. Sew their blankets.
They built the home you live in.
Turn socks inside out and cover
their kicking feet. Sing lullabies.
Kiss their burning foreheads.
These little demons, clawing fist-
fuls of memory inside your belly:
these are the needle-teething,
cackle-shrieking, bitter-blooded
motherfuckers who kept your heart
beating all those years in the boneyard.
